Hello all, I am Melissa A Benson, an "Alternate Reality" fantasy illustrator and fine artist. My images are done by hand, and many graphic decorations are done digitally. I like to use vivid colors and my style is representational rather than abstract.
Color work is done in dyes and color pencil or in oils on masonite. I use watercolor paper for the dye/color pencil art, but I am always experimenting with new supports. This year I'll be looking into colored papers for the color pencil art.
My black and white work is done with multi-weight graphite and/or charcoal for the widest range of values. I use heavy watercolor paper, light bristol paper or half-tone paper.
I specialize in anthropomorphic creatures, role playing character portraits and people in historic or fantasy costumes in natural settings. I have also done conceptual drawings for commercial clients and enjoy representing images from nature in decorative ways.
There is plenty of decorative art and seasonal holiday art in my portfolio. Most images have been designed for my Print on Demand shops: Zazzle.com and FineArtAmerica.com.
I accept private commissions. Mostly for RPG and fantasy character portraits, and I have done wedding invitations as well as commercial concept work. The gallery section of this site has samples of previous commissions. There is a pricing chart available to get an idea of how much a commission will cost and a testimonials page thanks to many satisfied customers. I appreciate the good press!
